The greens are making progress day by day!! There are about six or eight tiny little beet greens coming up!! such a beautiful color and so exciting! 😄

Broccoli, day 4
Kohlrabi, day 4
Beets, day 4. The white that you see are root hairs, not mold.
Red acre cabbage with radish heart in the center, day 4

All four of these trays were started on 5/18, and I hope that they are ready for Saturday’s event, although it’s quite questionable if the beets will be ready 😄. For now they’re still weighted, meaning that there’s a tray on top of the soil with weights on the tray so they can send down roots before they send up greens.

Pictures from day 3!

Broccoli on day three!!!
Kohlrabi, day 3
I have seen other people do this, so I am trying it too! Purple Radish in the center of a bed of red acre cabbage! I didn’t use form- just tried to sprinkle the right seeds on the right areas. The force of the water displaced some of the seeds. I could mitigate that with a misting bottle.

I am officially growing and getting ready to share/sell my microgreens.

Update: I took several trays with me to this event and gave away a bunch of samples. Everyone loved them!! I sold one box. At the end, I harvested the final greens into 3 boxes (each holds 42 g, or about 2.5 oz) for friends to take.

We here at the Aloha Garden Of Peace are delighted to announce that we are growing microgreens and will be bringing a batch to share this coming Saturday to the Meet and Greet event at Puna Kai shopping center on May 25 from 11-2 pm. I planted 4 trays yesterday, and hopefully, they will all be ready for eating in a week! I will be watering each of the trays approximately twice a day. If you are in town, please come on by to meet, greet, and support all the new entrepreneurs! Aloha!

Stay tuned and I will post pictures as I am growing trays of microgreens!!

Our mission for the Aloha Garden of Peace

Grow food-bearing and native plants and trees for the purpose of giving the plants and trees to people who have a place to grow them on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Our vision:

Right now, many thousands of residents on the Big Island receive aid from food pantries from churches, community centers, and senior communities. The food given is often canned goods, cereals, and other processed foods from the mainland. This isn’t sustainable. It would be better to give away food bearing (and native when possible) trees and plants so that more people have a sustainable food source growing on their own land.

This is a new clarification of what we have been doing and working on for years. We are in the process of figuring out how best to accomplish this, and if setting up as a 501(c)(3) would be a right fit for us. Let us know in the comments!

Mauna Loa Eruption update

Dear Friends,

Many of you might be wondering about the current eruption from Mauna Loa.

This link (https://www.usgs.gov/news/featured-story/mauna-loa-has-begun-erupting) is the best resource to learn all about it. The same website keeps a watch on all sorts of volcanos in Hawaii, California, Alaska, and up and down the West Coast.

Last night, we flew back to Hawaii after being away for a week, and here are two photos that Mark took on the plane.

With love to all!!

Sincerely,

Rachel and Mark
